Reading aloud to your child is such a great activity and, according to the Washington Post, one of the “most important things parents can do.” It helps our kiddos with language acquisition, literacy, fuels their imagination… and also provides important sleep cues to their bodies to settle down for a night of sleep.

At Bonne Nuit Baby, we have kids between 9 months - 8 years so we consider ourselves pretty well-versed on some of the best bedtime books for kids. Keep reading for see our top picks!

Hide Seek Stinky Sweet: The Little Book of Opposites. A beautifully-illustrated book of clever opposites that will have you and your little one laughing!

Dr. Seuss’ Sleep Softly Book. The one book that we could read over and over and over to our babies each night. Each page has a tactile component that will help to engage your littles!

The Going to Bed Book. This classic is our favorite of Sandra Boyton’s series. It’s engaging enough for a baby but also equally appropriate for a toddler, so will last a while!

Llama Llama Red Pajama. A classic bedtime story! It’s fun to read with the looping rhymes and has a great message that, once you’re in bed… it’s time to go to sleep. (Bonus: you can watch Ludacris freestyling the story).

Tree. A beautiful pop-up book that takes kids through the different seasons of the year through the eyes of an owl living in a tree.

You Can’t Take an Elephant on the Bus.  Straight from the UK, this book tells the stories of why big animals wouldn’t fit on a London double-decker bus… as it would cause a terrible fuss!

Be Bold, Baby! Oprah. You get a book! And you get a book! And you get a book! We love this simple board book for boosting self-esteem early in life. Love the mirror inside too—great for developing little ones!

Dragons Love Tacos. One of the few books that we don’t mind reading over and over and over. Great humor for both kids and adults. Anything by Adam and Daniel are surefire winners at story time.

Chicken Big. A hilarious tale of becoming comfortable with who you are. This book will have all ages giggling and begging for a repeat read.

Percy Jackson boxed set. This series is a great way to introduce older kids to Greek mythology. Looking for something to read after your kid’s 3rd go round with the Harry Potter series? This will satisfy the craving for fantasy and magic.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid boxed set. Jeff Kinney is a genius—he can draw in even the most reluctant reader with his series filled about a kid, his BFF and an annoying older brother. His drawings throughout the book break up the text and gives a great foundation for longer chapter books. Bonus: You can reward your kiddo with watching a Wimpy Kid movie after finishing the corresponding book!

The Magic Misfits #1. Neil Patrick Harris successfully wades into writing with this magical tale filled with hidden ciphers, puzzles and tricks. Great lessons on friendships and good and bad, this is much more than a book! There’s a second book for more magical adventures.
